Learning Intention
We are learning to make connections between fractions and decimal notations up to two decimal places.
AT Look for’s:
I can convert familiar factions to decimals (7/10 = 0.7, division by 10 to show place value)
I can convert familiar decimals to fractions.
I can visually represent decimals and what is looks like as a fraction (tenths and hundredths)

Middle Level I picked up a handful of smarties. One-third of them were red. What might a drawing of the smarties look like? 3/8 of a circle is coloured red. I cannot remember what colours the rest of the circle was. What might the circle look like? What might the missing numbers be? I folded a kindergarten square to show a fraction. How did I fold it and what might the fraction be? How many ways can you show 2/3? My friend and I ate all a pizza which was cut into 8 equal pieces. What fraction of the pizza might each of us eaten? Upper Level The answer is 3/7. What might the question be? Two fractions add to give ½. What might those two fractions be?
A Decimal Fraction is a fraction where the denominator (the bottom number) is a number such as 10, 100, 1000, etc (in other words a power of ten)
1/10 = 0.1
1/10 + 1/10 + 1/10 + 1/10 + 1/10 + 1/10 + 1/10 + 1/10 + 1/10 + 1/10 = 10/10
or 1 whole
1/10 = 0.1
1/10 + 1/10 + 1/10 + 1/10 + 1/10 + 1/10 + 1/10 + 1/10 + 1/10 + 1/10 = 10/10
or 1 whole
