Historical narrative
In a historical narrative, you tell about a historical event, blending facts with imagined characters and situations. When you write a historical narrative, you combine fiction with nonfiction. Like nonfiction, a historical narrative describes people who actually lived and events that actually happened. However, a historical narrative also includes fictional people and details imagined by the writer. A historical narrative should have the following characteristics:
• accurate historic events and details of actual places
• one person’s point of view
• some characters and circumstances invented by the writer • chronological organization

Planning a narrative (guiding questions)
Using the following History concepts, think about these questions when you plan your narrative about a particular explorer from the 18
th
century
Continuity and change
How did they become an explorer-early life and career? What was life like for an explorer in the 18th? How did their journeys of exploration impact the world we have today- what were they trying to achieve?
Cause and effect
How and why did the journey of exploration occur? What was the effect of their exploration?
Significance
How significant was exploration completed by your explorer of choice?
Perspectives
How would your explorer/crew feel being away from loved ones? How would they have felt during a tragedy such as loosing a crew-member, having the ship run aground etc.?
Empathy
How would your explorer/crew have been feeling before, during the voyage and at the destination of exploration?
Who will your historical narrative be about?
